Federal Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl says a new program to assist farmers when disasters strike is in the works.

While details are scarce, he says a catastrophic disaster
assistance program would deliver cash faster than existing programs.

Strahl says provincial and territorial agriculture ministers at the two-day meeting in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador unanimously endorsed the need for a separate disaster program.

Details on what the program might look like are expected this fall.
