1 Billion Rising Awareness March

A gathering in a park in February may seem a bit unusual, but the sun was shining, the spirits were high, and the turn out was good for this very important worldwide initiative.

The Rowan House Emergency Shelter held their 2nd annual march to raise awareness about violence against women and after we marched the downtown parade route, we gathered at the Ethel Tucker Park. These gatherings may seem small on a local scale, however, when combined with similar gatherings worldwide a difference can be made.

One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. Participants rise together worldwide to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable.

Musical performances by Tanya Ryan and Cree teacher and musician Walter MacDonald White Bear were enjoyed.

MLA Wayne Anderson was on hand to say a few words in support of the cause and Rowan House.
