Chancey Lane, a 23 year old from Claresholm, is this year's senior winner of the Alberta Young Speakers for Agriculture competition.

The competition took place July 12 at the Calgary Stampede grounds, and featured competitors ages 16-24.

Lane spoke on why agriculture is more than just farming.

"A farmer does so much more. Farmers are business people. They need to understand accounting and economics to make decisions for their operation. They also have to be really involved in new technology that's coming out, in order to stay competitive and use the resources available to them."

Lane works on the Waldron Grazing Ranch part time in the summer, and is looking forward to one day managing the family ranch.

He will be representing Alberta at the National competition taking place in Toronto at the beginning of November.
