Seeding is in Full Swing in the Province

As of last week, seeding is about 10 per cent complete in Alberta.

According to Alberta Ag and Forestry's latest Crop Report for May 8th, seeding progress is about 7 to 10 days behind the average schedule in the province, but the dry weather has allowed operations to start in all regions.

Less than one per cent of crops have emerged in Alberta as of last week, and all those crops are in the South region.

Rail Company Removes Hopper Cars from Network

CN Rail said, they're seeing a decrease in demand for grain orders.

Last week, the rail company reported delivering 4,941 cars across Western Canada, meeting all their orders. This is down from the April weekly average of 6,158 grain cars delivered per week.

CN said, the decrease in gain orders is typical for this time of year, and they're removing hopper cars from the network and placing them in short-term storage.

They added, removing excess cars will improve fluidity for all markets.

 

Liberals Delay the Passage of Bill C-49 Again

The Liberal government had two chances to pass Bill C-49 Friday, but refused to do so.

Now the earliest the Bill could be passed is May 22, exactly one month before the House of Commons rises on June 22.

After this year's grain backlog, the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions said, these delays in passing the Bill mean farmers could see another crop year with no legislation in place to hold the railways accountable.
