A young musician from Okotoks has received top honours.

Dallin Court, 12, was awarded with a gold medal for scoring the top mark in Alberta on the Level 1 Piano examination.

The regional gold medals are given out by the Royal Conservatory each academic year to Conservatory exam candidates who achieve the highest mark in their province or region. Candidates are required to score a minimum of 80% on their practical exam and need to complete the co-requisite theory examinations for their respective grade and discipline.

Court says a great amount of preparation was put into receiving the medal.

"There was a lot of hard practice and perfection with the songs I had to perform."

Songs performed included a few staccato pieces including one called Blinky the Robot, which Court says is one of his favourites, and one called Dance of the Martians.

Court says he'd like to see piano stay in his future.

"Maybe when I'm old enough for a teenage job I could teach piano for a bit."

He adds he'd like to continue playing piano and work towards earning more medals.
